Built in 1912, Fenway is the oldest ballpark in the major leagues. Over the years fans have turned out by the millions to support their favorites, from old school heroes like Williams and Yastrzemski, to more modern legends like Shilling, Ramirez and Ortiz. True, the team had a bit of a dry spell there in the 20th century, (namely most of it) but things in the new millennium are definitely looking up. And for once, being a Red Sox fan is not quite so painful. It’ll take some getting used to, but Bostonians are working on it.

It makes for a great hike or a boat ride around the island, and its a nice getaway from your getaway to the Cape.

Province Lands
Outer Cape Cod, near Provincetown

The Province Lands Area has long been a source of inspiration for writers, poets and artists. The stark colors of sand and sea, windswept dunes and the isolation of the Cape's tip still inspire the arts in Provincetown today. The numerous galleries and art schools in town, and the primitive dune shacks and beach retreats foster creativity and keep the tradition alive and well.

This home of the Celtics and Bruins replaced the storied Boston Garden in 1995, and though the current crop of Boston teams to play here haven't quite lived up to the standard set by the residents of the previous building, at least the original stadium's famous parquet floor made the trip to the new facility and parts of it were integrated into the new floor.

Boston Common

Boston Common is the oldest public park in the United States. This 48-acre urban oasis was acquired by the city way back in 1634, from a man by the name of William Blackstone, who was one of Boston’s original settlers. In the centuries since then, the Common has served as everything from a military drill ground during the Revolution, to a center for public activities and events in later years. Among the highlights in this lovely open space are the Central Burying Ground, an 18th century cemetery, and the Boston Massacre Memorial, a tribute to the five men lost in the first clash in the struggle for Independence.

Right across Charles Street from the Common is the smaller Boston Public Garden. The elegant English-style landscaping here surrounds a lagoon that was added in the 1870s. This small lake plays host to one of Boston’s most popular attractions – the famous Swan Boat Rides. For over a hundred years, these graceful boats have been offering rides around the lake, and their appearance here every April is a sure sign that spring has arrived. True, it’s not exactly white water rafting we’re talking about here, but for a relaxing way to begin your tour of the city, it’s hard to beat.

Cape Cod Rail Trail & Beaches
From South Dennis to Provincetown
View Map | Website
Starting about five miles south of Scargo Tower, this bike trail follows twenty-five miles of the old train route that ran from Boston all the way out to Provincetown on the tip of the Cape. It’s a great way to experience Cape Cod, and an even better way to work off some of that ice cream that we’ve been inhaling non-stop since we crossed the canal. One of the stops along the Rail Trail is Orleans, where Skaket Beach is just one of many family-friendly beaches on Cape Cod. Other highlights for outdoor lovers on the Cape include Chatham, with its picture postcard pier and architecture and Truro to the north, where golfers can hack away in the shadow of the Highlands Lighthouse.
