Opening in 1985, this 140 million-dollar mall gave retail customers an eyeful of much more than merchandise. Architect Jon Jerde’s puckish design is full of split levels, odd little corners, and brightly colored storefronts. Among the eye candy are nearly two hundred stores and shops, ranging from the typical (Ann Taylor, Banana Republic) to the unique (Planet Funk, The San Diego Trading Company).

Though its actually part of San Diego, the upscale enclave of La Jolla seems like a world to itself, and you kind of get the idea that folks here like it that way. Sort of San Diego’s version of Rodeo Drive, La Jolla’s Prospect Street is lined with lovely hotels and restaurants, as well as some of the most elegant jewelry shops anywhere.

Seaport Village is located on the south end of San Diego Bay’s Embarcadero. This shopping and dining area brings a taste of Cape Cod to the West Coast, and its lighthouse replica in the center of the square is hard to miss. Around the lighthouse are nearly sixty shops and restaurants, ranging from simple fare to fine seafood.
